Émile St-Pierre

Émile St-IMG_20160711_115325Pierre is a Master’s student doing research on local economic revitalization in Yubari, Japan.

He investigates forms of life emerging from the environment left over from municipal bankruptcy and struggle to transition from mining to farming and tourism in Yubari, Japan. Different efforts to revitalize Yubari are being carried out, but it is not well understood how these overlap or how these relate to the town’s quickly changing environment: aging, depopulation, and municipal projects to make the city more compact have made room for wild animals and vegetation.

Émile investigates revitalization and what it means for this particular area of Hokkaido, but also what the experiences of revitalization in Yubari can say about similar places in Japan, Canada and elsewhere.
