Chantal Gailloux

CG

In a multidisciplinary focus, Chantal did her Bachelors degree in Journalism with a specialization in social law, and a Masters degree in environmental sciences at Université du Québec à Montréal. She began her Ph.D. in Sociology and Anthropology at Concordia University in Fall 2014, and is currently in New York City for her Ph.D. fieldwork.
Chantal’s thesis project examines the democratic practices of community gardens in Harlem, NYC, and the negotiation process with city agencies, like GreenThumb, and the Housing Preservation and Development department, in the context of the affordable housing plan which might evict many of them. For the length of her fieldwork, she’ll be associated with the Public Space Research Group at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center.
